Earliest Painted Representation of Shroud of Turin
Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts specialist Eugenio Donandoni recently made a startling and unexpected discovery when he was cataloging a 16th century prayerbook for the auction house Christie's.
Among the many illuminated illustrations by several artists, the book contains a double page image of three bishops holding a banner.
The importance of Donandoni's discovery is that the Shroud is shown undamaged by a fire that occurred in 1532 and left the cloth marred with large burnt areas. A group of Poor Clare nuns tried to repair some of the damage, but to this day the Shroud shows patches and numerous burnt marks.
